On the 4th of June, 2015, my grandmother was accused of smuggling two pots of flowers over the Latvian/Russian border. She intended to take the flowers to the grave of her grandfather in Pytalovo, previously known as Abrene. In 1945, the town of Abrene was annexed to the USSR, along with the rest of Latvian territory. In 1991, after Latvia restored its independence, Abrene remained part of the Russian Federation and nowadays requires a visa to get into. The flowers are also the main subject of my grandmother’s albums.
